Introduction
Most of the volcanic islands face problems associated with population growth, agricultural development and the expansion of the touristic sector. This situation has significant impacts on the water resources, inducing situations of scarcity and pollution that has worsened over time.
The complexity of the volcanic hydrogeological systems, characterized by the occurrence of perched and basal aquifers, induces great vulnerabilities to the recharge variations and for the processes of marine salt water intrusion.
For the other side, the management of water resources on small islands faces own problems, related with isolation, scarcity of resources and recent increasing of consumption. This situation requires integrated and sustainable management processes, where interaction with the marine environment is relevant.
With this event we intend to communicate and discuss significant aspects of production, availability, quality, use and management of water resources in insular environments of volcanic origin, integrating socioeconomic, environmental, institutional and regulatory issues related to water resource.
